Meet our Members of the Month — Dave & Joyce Lehtonen
Dave and Joyce moved to Florida from Austin, Texas in 1985 where Dave was an engineering manager for Motorola and Joyce was an area manager for AT&T They Settled in Melbourne where Dave worked as a senior program manager for Harris Corporation and Joyce as office manager for Fairfield Communities. They moved a piano to Florida that Joyce got when she was eight eyears old but had little time to play. Dave did manage to stay connected to music, singing in the Austin Community Chorus and the Brevard Community Chorus in Melbourne as well as singing in the church choir. When the decision came to move to The Villages they decided that Dave's organ and Joyce's piano had to go because of a lack of space in their new home. Dave continued to sing in the Philharmonic Chorale but Joyce missed her piano. They saw an ad in the newspaper for a Roland KR5 digital piano and went to Lady Lake to look at it and were so impressed they bought it. The KR5 came with lessons from Showtime Music, so in 2004 they started attending Staci's classes in Spruce Creek Plaza. Not long after, they traded the KR5 in for a KR107 for Joyce to play while Dave started guitar lesson with Jim Douglas. Soon, Dave bought a Yamaha bass guitar that he plays in the Monday jam session as well as playing in their group
The G-Strings, so named because all the music they played initially was in the key of G. This group still meets on Friday noon at the Lehtonen home with other MusicPass members. Dave and Joyce also purchased a VIMA instrument so with the pianos and guitars arround their home, there isn't room for much else. During their grandchildren's visit this year they rented a clarinet from Showtime Music so that they and the two grandsons could enjoy playing together.
